    July 8, 2010

It is pretty hard to think about snow with the temps being in the nineties for the last few days. It is also easy to forget about hunting season this time of year. If you are a resident, the anterless permit applications will be accepted beginning this coming Monday, July 12. If you are thinking about bear hunting, there are lots of them around this year.

A reminder to all of you that are Pennsylvania hunters! You can purchase your new hunting license online now. I just finished ordering mine from the Pa. Game Commission Outdoor Shop website. * For those of you that have ATVs & Snowmobiles - I did some price checking today and found out that just because one insurance company has better rates on one type of machine doesn't mean that they will have better rates on both types of machines. The company that insures my snowmobile has better rates by a mile on my sled, but they are more expensive for my ATV. It pays to shop around!

We had our annual picnic this past saturday. The turnout was light, but the food was good and the weather was great. A little on the warm side for this old snowmobiler, but I never have liked the hot weather. * My wife and I took a ride on route 44 last week and all of the laurel was in bloom. We stopped at the Black Forest Inn for lunch and bumped into Ray & Darlene Kemp. They are old snowmobiling friends that moved downstate last year. They were in the area for the Laurel Festival in Wellsboro. It was good to see them again.

Six of our members met yesterday at the clubhouse. Four of us walked the 2 mile stretch of route 6 between the clubhouse and the Log Cabin restaurant to pick up litter. Another member drove his pickup and collected the bags of trash that we accumulated. The last member stayed at the clubhouse and trimmed the trees and bushes and put mulch around them. After we were done with all that we took a hike on the trail to check out a washout between the clubhouse and Ansonia. This must be repaired before the 2011 snowmobile season starts. We also have a couple of other jobs to be done at the clubhouse. Keeping a snowmobile club going is pretty much of a year-round job. This upkeep of the clubhouse, grounds and the trails has to be done every year, snow or no! This is why we need the support of all of our members, near & far. Don't forget our picnic this Saturday!

Bring a dish to pass if you can. If you are just in the area for the weekend and can't bring a dish to pass, come anyway! ** Tioga County and Wellsboro are year-round destinations. Some of the trails that we snowmobile on are open to motorcycles, bicycles and hikers too.

I took Auggie the Doggy for a ride on my ATV tonight before supper. When we came out of the woods and onto the trail that runs under the powerline, there was a large male bear scratching the pole that supports the powerline to mark his territory. They do this every year and you can tell the fresh scratchings from the old ones. I did not have Auggie hooked to a leash and I was afraid to let go of his collar so that I could take a better quality picture. The only pic that I managed to get didn't turn out very well, but it is better than nothing.

    ELECTION DAY
    Get out and vote!
We would like to thank everyone who helped make the 20th annual Upper Pine Creek Trout Tournament a success. - All of the donors who helped fund the tournament, the volunteers who solicited for the donations, the people who helped tag and stock the fish and the anglers who entered the tournament. Also we can't forget all of those that helped at the clubhouse with all of the tasks that are involved with operating the tournament. Many of the people who help are not snowmobilers, just good people who like to help a good cause. There are many worthy causes that are funded by this tournament. A special thank you to Nancy & Ron from the Colton Point Motel for all of the help and support that they have given us. We don't have all of the numbers compiled yet, everyone is taking a well deserved break.

We can only upload one pic at a time. Pictured today is 14 year old Dane Baker of Manheim, Pa. He won $50 on his first cast in the tournament. * The 50/50 winner of $448.00 was Kathy Wieand of Mertztown, Pa.

We are having a meeting tonight to finalize our trout tournament plans. It is not too late to sponsor a fish or enter the tournament. * We had a different bear come visit last night. Augie the doggy was in the living room when he just starting barking with his 'bear bark'. When he smells a bear he has a louder, higher pitched bark than he does for God's other creatures. We went out on the deck and this bear just walked up under the deck with Augie barking and me yelling at him and didn't seem to have a care in the world. Somebody has been feeding this bear and he lost his fear of humans. 'A fed bear is a dead bear' is the old saying.

We have lost a good friend and fellow snowmobiler! - William (Bill) Thompson passed away Friday night. He was a member of our club and the God's Country Club. Bill not only rode, but he was a pretty good mechanic as well. During snowmobiling season, there were always a bunch of sleds parked at Bill's place and the coffee pot was always on. He will be missed by all his friends and family.

Saturday is usually the slowest day of the week for hits on this website. The exception is when the 'S' word is on the weather forecast. Yesterday had the most hits of any day last week. When there is some snow, we can count on you being there. * Only one week to go before the official opening of snowmobile season in the PA WILDS. (Except for State Game Lands) * For those of you that can get T.V. channel 21 (WHP-CBS) out of Harrisburg, we will be running a 30 second commercial on the six pm news. This will be aired Mon. thru Friday this week. There is also a youtube link to the ad on this website. * We were late getting our membership renewals mailed out this year because the PSSA Snowmobile/ATV show was at the end of Oct. instead of the middle of the month like it was in the past. Please send us your renewal, or your new membership. I have had people tell me that they already belong to a club. You are allowed to belong to more than one! I belong to several as well as the PSSA. Also please support our business members! * We have members from all over the mid-Atlantic states and even one from Sneads Ferry, North Carolina. HI JOHN! * I just checked several weather forecasts and am still amazed at the difference in the forecasts for the same area. There is some light snow coming down right now and the forecast states that it will be sunny. I'll go with the snow! You all have a great day!

There is just 9 days remaining until the start of snowmobiling season. We have some last minute snow fence to put up on a landowners property to keep sledders on the trail and not all over the landowners yard. We also have some snow fence to take down that is across the trail in a couple of spots. We will then take an inspection ride to check for any trees that might have come down since the initial trail clearing was done. IF we have snow like we did last year, we will do this by sled. If not, we will use an ATV and our feet. We will meet at the clubhouse around 10am on Sunday Dec. 13th.

We reported yesterday about the trails in Elk township not being legally open to snowmobiles. There have already been a couple of emails asking for more specifics. - These are the Elk township roads that are NOT located within the Tioga State Forest bounderies. The roads that effect us for the most part are - E. Shambaker Rd., Ridge Rd. & Leetonia Rd. There is also a small portion of Elk Run Rd. This means that if you would travel out Thompson Hollow Rd. to the stop sign, you would have to turn left onto Elk Run Rd., proceed out to Cedar Mountain Rd., bear right and go to the top to get to Ridge Rd. If you wanted to go to the God's Country S.C. and the Germania area, you would turn right onto Ridge Rd. and go out to where the trail goes across the fields. Last year, DCNR groomed Ridge Rd. down the hill to E. Shambaker Rd. where they turned the groomer around. They will not be grooming that this year, because the township portion of that road is not a legal trail.

It is just 3 weeks until the first day of snowmobiling season on STATE FOREST TRAILS. Sunday Dec. 13, is the first day. You cannot sled on STATE GAME LAND TRAILS until Jan. 17. I am still surprised at the number of people who don't know the difference. That includes people who live very close to those lands. * There are a lot of trail changes this year in the areas where there is gas drilling activity. * Elk township did not pass a resolution to open their roads to snowmobiling. This will create a lot of extra traffic on Cedar Mountain Rd. While this trail is 2 lanes wide, it is more narrow than some of the other joint-use state forest rds. There are very sharp curves and some steep drop-offs. Please use extra caution and slow way down for these curves and stay on your side of the trail. When nearing the well drilling areas, watch out for workers and trucks, etc. We all want to enjoy the outdoors and not spend any time in the hospital. * We have been lucky enough to have snow on the first day of riding season the last couple of years, maybe we will luck out again. * Due to the snowmobile show being at the end of Oct. this year, we were late getting our membership renewals mailed out. To save us postage and keep our membership at the same low rate, please let us know if you want a card mailed to you. Most of you don't want one, but we will gladly mail you one on request if you so desire.

Our website was down yesterday morning and no one could get access. I was cussing at my computer for not working properly when I received a phone call from Brad (one of our members and a good friend) He informed me that he could not get on either. It turned out that our server was probably doing some maintenance work on their system. Everything is back to normal. We held our monthly meeting last night and after much discussion, we decided to upgrade our snocam to a better quality camera. This will not happen overnight, we have to get price quotes, etc. Most of our trails are ready with the exception of a few more trees that have come down. They will be removed before riding season starts. There is a lot of gas drilling activity going on, so please use caution when riding near the drilling sites. We are going to mail out our membership renewal forms next week, so if you mail yours in now, you could save us some postage money. Make sure that you put in a note stating if you want a card or not. Jim Baney showed me a printout of the new trail map that is on the DCNR website. I guess that it will be out in print version pretty soon. You can see it on this site if you go to the DCNR links. It takes a little while to download, so don't waste you time if you have a dial-up internet connection. We have some more new business members including a couple of rental cabins north of route 6 located on snowmobile trails. Please support our business members, they support your club and this site.

We sold our groomer last week but we were too busy with the PSSA snowmobile/ATV show to report on it. As usually, Murphy was alive and well. The big rig that was going to pick it up had three stops to make before picking up our machine. He had to go to Vermont, Ontario & New York before coming to our clubhouse. We had to do this by last Thursday because we were packing up Friday morning to go to the show down in Lebanon. The truck showed up at 5:30 pm. He had been delayed by paperwork problems at the Canadian border. (Both ways) The flatbed was 4' high and our loading dock was 3' high. We were prepared for this and had some planks to bridge the gap. It turned out that the last machine on the truck had to offloaded first out near Pittsburgh. It had to come off of the truck before we could load our machine. It had a dead battery and also weighed a lot. It was much bigger and heavier than ours. Well, the planks broke getting the heavy machine off and we had to come up with some other planks to get our machine on. Then when loading the big machine back on, it teetered like a seesaw before slamming down on the back of the flatbed. Our president, Dave Hassler did a fine job running that machine. When the tractor went to leave, he had to make a wide swing and got stuck in the mud. We had to call his boss in Minnesota to tell him that we had to arrange for a wrecker to pull him out. He finally left after 10pm and we went home for a very late supper.

Dave & I traveled down to the Snowmobile/ATV show at the Lebanon Expo Center in Lebanon, Pa. on Friday. We set up our club's booth and met up with Wilmer who came to help us out. The show had been held in York, Pa. for the past few years and we didn't know what to expect at the new location. There was a great turnout and we were quite busy all 3 days. We saw a lot of old friends & members and made a bunch of new ones. I had a lot of inquiries about Augie the Doggie. He has a regular fan club going. We had a lot of positive feedback about this website. We are always receptive to any comments that you have. The only complaints that I have heard is about the poor picture quality on the snocam. You will also see a strap that I am using to return the tree to it's former upright position. A few of us went to a township meeting the other night to discuss some trail issues. While we we there, a couple of residents had complaints about loud pipes on ATVs, trail bikes and snowmobiles. If you have loud pipes on your machine, STAY HOME! I have been to several meetings and loud pipes are one of the chief complaints. Once any of these trails get closed, they will probably never get reopened. Then only the outlaws will be out there riding not the responsible, law-abiding ones. Does that sound familiar? If you know any of these jerks, tell them that their behavior is going to cause trail closures. They will probably be the first ones to cry about not having a place to ride. * While we are on the subject of trails, there are going to be some changes in the trails leading to the God's Country snowmobile club & the Germania area due to gas drilling activity. We will post these when the season gets closer. While you are on this site, don't forget to check out our business member section. We just had a few more sign up. Things are back to normal now. The snowman is gone and there is just a little snow left in the shady spots. Our forsythia bush was flattened out by the heavy snow and it looked like a 'Bloomin Onion' like the ones at the Olive Garden. My wife said to trim some off of the top. I replied that there was no top, everything was sides. Anyhow, I trimmed it and will do some raking, just like a normal October. * The Snow word in the forecast really generates some traffic on this website. The trail condition page doesn't start until Dec. 13, but by the looks of things outside, it could be now. I wonder if Al Gore has checked out this site? We have some small trees & bushes damaged here at the house, but nothing major so far. We had another inch of fresh snow last night. It went a couple of degrees above freezing yesterday. That was enough for some of the heavy snow to fall off of the trees.

We have lived in Tioga county 13 years and this is the first time that a snow plow has gone past the house during the month of October. There seems to be about 5 or 6 inches of snow. I will venture out later this morning and measure it. We have a small cherry tree in the back yard and it was drooping so low that 2 young deer were feasting on the cherries. (see snocam) We shouldn't loose too many trees as long as it doesn't get windy. * 8:30 am update measured snow= 6 inches on our picnic table. If you are coming to this area this weekend, I would recommend putting a chainsaw, gas & oil in the trunk of your car. The forecast is for the possibility of some heavy wet snow. We had an early snow like this back in the seventies and there were trees down everywhere. This is one time that I hope the weatherman is wrong. We would have to clear the trails all over again. * Augie the doggie couldn't figure out why he kept falling off of my ATV. I was working on the snogage for the snocam and the seat of the ATV was snow covered. He would jump up from one side and slide right off the other side.

We have been very busy the last few days working at the clubhouse and on the trails. On friday the guys washed down the siding and cleaned the screens and windows. I ran my tracter with a brushhog from the clubhouse west to the Rough Cut Lodge and back. Yesterday, we had eleven people show up to help with the trail clearing and some yard work around the clubhouse. A big THANK YOU to all that helped. David W., David J., Larry, Brian, David B., Tom, Ken, Pam, myself and Ralph in the kitchen. A special thanks to Doug, who brought a skid steer and cleared a lot of rock and mudslides from the trail and helped install a new drainpipe up near the Rough Cut Lodge. Also thanks to Paul, who provided the pipe. We accomplished a lot and would have gotten even more done if the rains hadn't come. Just about everything this club does depends on the weather. We still have some more brush trimming to do in the next couple of weeks before we are done. If anyone can help, please give me a call and I will help if I am available. If not, I will try and get one of the other guys to go with you.

The God's Country snowmobile club had their annual work party yesterday. They had 18 hard workers show up to take care of the chores. There was a lot of work to be done in and around the clubhouse as well as some snow fence to be repaired along one of the trails. The weather was good, 39 degrees early on and sweatshirts were in order . It warmed up some after mid-morning and the sweatshirts came off. A tasty lunch was provided and the ladies took a break from their other chores to help with the food. A big thank you to S&S Construction, who provided some special assistance. ** Don't forget our work party this coming Saturday, Sept. 26. There is a lot of brush trimming to be done on the trail behind the clubhouse and some other work to be done at the clubhouse and the grounds. Bring leather gloves, weedwackers, garden pruners, lopers etc. Please email us if you are coming so we can plan on the amount of food for lunch. If you can't make the work party, but can donate some time between Sept. 22 & Oct. 1 , give me a call at one of the numbers listed above.

I took an inspection tour of the trail behind the clubhouse that goes from Ansonia to Rough Cut Lodge. I had to cut a few trees that were down across the trail & some multi-flora rose that was across the trail. Many of the land owners mow their portion of the trail, but the jaggers have to be weedwacked and trimmed back. Thanks to all that make our job much easier. I have a picture here that shows how much the trail can grow shut in just one year. The trail should be straight ahead in the picture, but there is nothing there but green! I took a tractor with a brushhog thru there last year at this same time. You would never know it to look at the picture.

September is a busy month for snowmobile clubs in Pennsylvania! The weather is cooling down and the bugs aren't as bad. It is time to clear trails and do any work around the clubhouse. When October comes, archery deer season begins and a lot of landowners don't want anyone disturbing the game on their property. * Here are a few important dates in September. * Sept. 19 is the work party at the God's Country snowmobile club in Germania. A week later, Sept. 26 is the work party for the Pa. Grand Canyon snowmobile club. The Grand Canyon club will be working the last two weeks in Sept. If you can't make the work party date but are available to help at some other time, please send us an email. We can always use some extra help. *FYI- The temp was down to 42 last night.

A reminder to all - Lodging in this area is getting harder to come by due to all the gas drilling activity in the northern tier of Pa. If you want to come to the area to see all of the beautiful fall colors, book early! We have lots of places to stay listed in the business member section of this site. We also have links to the Tioga County Visitor's Bureau and the Wellsboro Chamber of Commerce listed there. We had a light turnout for our picnic last Saturday, but everyone had lots of good food to eat and everyone got a door prize. The weather was too hot for me, but some people like it that way. We might have our picnic in June next year. It seems that a lot of people have plans made for August. * My wife & I went downstate to a family picnic the next day. I was surprised at the amount of difference in gas prices down there between the high and the low. In this area, it is usually just a few cents. The lowest price was at the Turkey Hill at routes 54 & 61. It was $252.9. A few miles further south, it was $279.9. Then it averaged about $2.59.9 in the Adamstown area. I hope that fuel doesn't go up too much this winter.
