    Ricketts Glen is one of the most scenic areas in Pennsylvania. The park is comprised of 13,050 acres in Luzerne, Sullivan and Columbia counties. Ricketts Glen State Park offers camping, rental cabins, boating, hunting, fishing, swimming, 26 miles of hiking trails, environmental education, cross-country skiing, skiing, ice fishing, winter camping and snowmobile trails.

    All-Terrain Vehicles in Pennsylvania
    Pennsylvania's state forest ATV trail system has grown to 230 miles of trails in 10 different districts. DCNR is now targeting development of ATV activities to private, municipal and county lands. There are no ATV trails in state parks. ATVs must be registered with DCNR. Applications are available by accessing the link above.

    Boating, Canoeing and Kayaking in PA State Forests and Parks
    More than 5,000 miles of rivers and streams flow through state forest land, offering a remote paddling experience. Many forests have ponds and lakes, and six forest districts have developed water trails. Canoeing, kayaking, boating and rafting are permitted on state forest land unless otherwise posted. Forest maps showing state forest lakes, access roads and parking are available. A DCNR boat launching permit or Fish and Boat Commission registration is required for launching. State parks also offer sailing, canoeing and whitewater boating. Motorboats must display current PA boating license.

    Greenways & Trails in PA
    Rails to Trails are abandoned railroad beds converted for recreational uses such as hiking, biking, jogging and cross-country skiing. Pennsylvania leads the nation in the number of trails converted. More than 1,200 miles of trails travel the former routes of trains along rivers, through quaint towns and under canopies of trees.     State forests have some of the most pristine streams, ponds and lakes in the Commonwealth and they support abundant fish life. Nearly 3,000 miles of waterways are classified as high quality and another 626 miles of waterways are listed as exceptional value. In addition, the Commonwealth has 207 miles of designated wilderness trout streams. State parks offer unlimited opportunities for fishing, from giant lakes down to small ponds set aside for children. You can also fish in the Susquehanna River and small bodies of water such as streams, creeks, licks and runs. Columbia and Montour counties are host to the Susquehann River and various streams abundant with fish life.     Audubon Pennsylvania has produced an 85 page Susquehanna River Birding and Wildlife Trail Guide that includes over 200 locations in 39 counties that afford ample opportunity to view birds and other wildlife including elk, black bear and river otter.     The Robbins Trail Danville, PA 17821
    The Robbins Trail is the oldest Rail-to-Trail in the country. This trail offers distances of up to 5 miles and features a scenic covered bridge fishing spot at its north end. The trail begins at the Hess Field Park Complex which is accessible behind Perkins restaurant, off Rt 54. Here you will find plenty of parking as well as picnic and rest room facilities. The trail is considered mild.

    Winter Recreation in PA Forests and State Parks 888-PA-PARKS
    During the winter months, weather and ice conditions should be checked before beginning any type of excursion. State park snow and ice depth information is available using the link above. Cross country skiing is one of the most popular wintertime sports and may be the most versatile. Thousands of miles of cross-country skiing trails are located throughout the state. More than 2,600 miles of snowmobile roads and trails are maintained in 14 state forests from the last day of deer season in December to April 1. Snowmobiles must be properly registered with the snowmobiling unit in the Snowmobile/ATV Registration Section and have the permit visibly displayed. Snowmobile trail conditions can be checked by calling 877-SNOMBLE. Some state parks offer opportunities for sledding, ice skating, ice fishing and ice boating. Iceboats must have a state park launching permit.
